Backlink indexer
Published · By IndexChex
In brief
A backlink indexer is a service that takes a list of URLs, usually third-party pages carrying links to your site, and generates signals that lead search engine crawlers such as Googlebot to fetch them. It can secure crawling, but whether a fetched page is indexed remains the search engine's decision.
Definition
A backlink indexer is software, usually sold as a paid web service, that accepts URLs and tries to get them visited by a search engine crawler. The URLs are typically pages on other people's websites that contain a link to the customer's site: guest posts, directory listings, citations, forum profiles or press pickups. Because the customer has no Search Console access to those hosts, the usual route of requesting indexing does not exist, and an indexer fills that gap.
The word "indexer" overstates what the tool can do. Google states that it does not guarantee it will crawl, index or serve any page. A backlink indexer acts on the first step, discovery and crawling. The later step, indexing, is decided by Google after it fetches and evaluates the page.
In practice
A typical workflow looks like this:
- The user builds or buys links and exports the URLs of the pages that host them.
- The URLs are pasted or uploaded into the indexer, often in batches of thousands.
- The service generates crawl signals so that Googlebot finds and fetches each URL.
- After a waiting period, the user checks which URLs appear in Google, then resubmits the misses.
Providers differ in submission speed, batch size, pricing model (per URL submitted, per URL indexed, or credits with refunds) and in whether they offer a drip feed option that spreads submissions over days. Some, such as the IndexChex service, bundle an index checker into the same account so step four does not need a separate tool.
Relation to backlink indexing
A backlink only passes value if search engines know the page carrying it exists. Google discovers most URLs by following links from pages it has already crawled, and a new guest post on a rarely crawled blog may sit undiscovered for a long time. A backlink indexer shortens that delay. The broader practice is described under backlink indexing.
What an indexer cannot fix is a page Google chooses not to keep. Thin or duplicate content, a noindex rule or a robots.txt block will stop indexing however many times the URL is submitted. That is why honest providers describe crawling as the deliverable and indexing as an outcome to be measured.
